Over the Last 24 Hours:

July 4 DUII

Benton County Sheriff’s Office participated in extra DUII saturation patrol to coincide with the Independence Day weekend, June 29 through July 5, 2017.

During those dates, deputies working the extra patrol conducted 249 traffic stops for traffic violations, issuing 39 citations.

Nine traffic citations were issued for speeding, one citation for failing to carry or present a driver’s license, and four for driving with a suspended or revoked license.

On Saturday July 8, 2017, at 4:21 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the report of a drive-by shooting in the 15500 block of Southeast Alder Street.

Officers arrived in the area and learned that someone in a smaller white SUV fired multiple shots at three males in front of a house. Witnesses told police that three black males were in the SUV and the driver sped out of the area after the shooting.

Officers located the three males who are believed to be the intended victims, none of whom suffered any injuries.

Hate Crimes

On Friday July 7, 2017, Portland Police officers arrested 49-year-old Frederick Nolan Sorrell on hate crime charges in connection with a May 2017 incident.

Sorrell was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Intimidation in the Second Degree (three counts). Sorrell will be arraigned on Monday.

The charges come as a result of an investigation into a report that Sorrell threatened a Muslim victim using words and hand gestures.
